Algarve Plus – July 2024

This month’s Theme is all about “Backstreets”.

We invited Richard Spregler to be the Guest Judge for this month’s theme.  It’s also the second time that Richard is guest judging a challenge as he also judged the Church Interiors back in March.
Richard is a Professional Photographer and specialises in Architectural Photography. You can check out Richard’s work via his Website.

Thanks very much Richard!

Thanks to all that few that have taken part and congratulations to those who were selected and can be seen in July’s edition of the Algarve Plus Magazine.

The next theme for Algarve Plus we will have to deal with is: “Fishing“.

Words of Wisdom:

12 Republica dos Kagados
I picked this image because it is unlike all the rest. I am attracted to the vibrant colors and the fact that there is something visually interesting everywhere in the photograph.

07 Mulher de Estremoz
I enjoy the vibrant colors of the figure on the right, offsetting what is almost a monochromatic image. Again, a slightly longer focal length lens would keep the distance from getting to small.

06 Lanterns and Laundry
Two things would help this photograph.  Ten seconds later, the people on the steps would appear fully on the bottom.  A little more space on the left would negate the negative edge tension created by the dark lines on the edge of the frame.

10 Quiet
This is a good example of a near/far composition and it gives a feeling of great depth. Two things could help improve this image. Straighten the vertical on the right side and crop the right to the edge of the first full circle, so that the circle touches the edge of the frame. Secondly, crop or clone out the distracting black line on the very edge of the left side.

04 Festa de São João
This has wonderful vibrant colors that “jump out” at the viewer. This is a good exception to getting the camera off center. The people are perfect, especially the right person whose head is centered between the doorways. The focal length is also perfect-the distance doesn’t get to small.
